About IIC

Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC)

Malla Reddy University, Hyderabad

In the year 2018, the Ministry of Education (MoE), through its Innovation Cell (MIC), launched the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) program in collaboration with AICTE. This initiative is designed for Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to systematically foster a culture of innovation and a start-up ecosystem across educational institutions in India.

Objective of IIC

The primary objective of IICs is to engage a large number of faculty, students, and staff in various innovation and entrepreneurship-related activities, including:

  • Ideation and problem-solving

  • Proof of Concept (PoC)      development

  • Design Thinking workshops

  • Intellectual Property Rights      (IPR) training

  • Project handling and      management at pre-incubation/incubation stages

This engagement aims to establish and stabilize a strong innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem within HEIs.

Why the IIC Model?

The IIC framework was developed to address key challenges observed in HEIs:

  • Low frequency and ad-hoc      nature of I&E activities

  • Limited involvement from      institutional leadership

  • Lack of coordination in      mobilizing and utilizing resources

  • Underutilization of the      creative and entrepreneurial potential of youth

Salient Features of the IIC Model

  • Flexible calendar-based activity planning

  • Structured scoring and reward system

  • Decentralized operations with well-defined roles

  • Real-time progress monitoring and reporting

  • Incentive mechanisms for active contributors

  • Fully integrated digital platform for coordination and reporting

Over the past few years, the IIC initiative has proven to be sustainable and scalable, making a tangible impact on India's innovation ecosystem. Notably, India’s improved rank to 48th position in the Global Innovation Index (GII) reflects these collective efforts.
